Checking chain tension
Precondition
Motorcycle is resting unloaded on side stand
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attention
It is not possible to tension the chain correctly if there is a load on the motorcycle.
Check and adjust chain tension only when there is no load or weight on the motorcycle.
Chains stretch unevenly, so turn the rear wheel to find the point at which chain deflection midway along the run between chain sprocket and pinion is least.
At this point, push the chain up as far as it will go and measure chain deflection (A).
Technical data
Chain deflection
Motorcycle with no weight applied, supported on its side stand

(-) Final inspection and check of roadworthiness
Check operation of the anti-theft alarm (DWA).
Test
Result: Anti-theft alarm control unit; the General warning light shows and the "DWA" battery warning appears on the display. The integral battery in the anti-theft alarm has lost its entire original capacity. There is no assurance that the anti-theft alarm will be operational if the motorcycle's battery is disconnected.
Measure:
=> 65 75 520, Replace batteries for control unit of anti-theft alarm system (Billed as a separate item)
A pre-ride check is performed after you switch on the ignition. The operability of all warning lights and warning symbols are checked. If one of the indicator or warning lights fails, connect the motorcycle to the BMW Motorrad diagnostic system and follow the instructions issued by the system.
The instrument cluster shows 3 phases in succession:
Phase 1:
The rev. counter and speedometer needles both swing to the limit values on their scales.
At the same time, the following warning lights and telltale lights are switched on in succession:
Telltale light for high-beam headlight and left turn indicator telltale light
General warning light, showing yellow, and neutral telltale light
Warning light for fuel down to reserve and right turn indicator telltale light
Warning light for oil pressure.
ABS warning light
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warning
Some malfunctions cannot be indicated if the 'General' warning light cannot be displayed.
Check that the 'General' warning light comes on, and that it shows red and yellow.
The rev. counter and speedometer needles both swing back to rest. At the same time, all the warning lights and telltale lights switched on in the initial phase are switched off in reverse sequence. The warning light for the engine oil pressure does not go out until the engine has been started and the requisite engine oil pressure has built up.
Perform the BMW Motorrad Integral ABS pull-away test at min. 5 km/h.
Check operation of clutch and gearbox in all gears.
Check operation of brake system.
Start the engine.
Check operation of heated handlebar grips.
Check the readings of the on-board computer.
Check operation of kill switch.
Checking engine oil level
Park the motorcycle upright.
Allow the engine to idle until the fan starts up, then allow it to idle one minute longer.
Wipe the area around the oil filler neck clean.
Remove oil dipstick (1) and wipe it with a clean, dry cloth.
Test
Insert the oil dipstick into the oil filler neck until the head rests on the crankcase, and turn it backward through one full turn to make the level easier to read.
Remove the oil dipstick and check the oil level.
Technical data
Engine oil level
Between MIN and MAX marks
Result: If the oil level is below the MIN mark:
Measure:
Top up the engine oil.
Technical data
Engine oil, quantity for topping up
maximum top-up quantity between MIN and MAX marks
0.4 l
Fluids and lubricants
of products recommended by BMW Motorrad and generally admissible viscosity classes
Result: If the oil level is above the MAX mark:
Measure:
Correct the oil level.
(+) Checking battery charge state
(-) Checking battery charge state
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attention
Standard, commercially available chargers connected to the on-board socket could cause irreparable damage to the central vehicle electronics (ZFE) and themselves.
Use only battery chargers approved by BMW Motorrad for use with motorcycles equipped with ZFE.
If the battery charger indicates that on-board voltage has dropped to the lower voltage limit for the on-board system, you can recharge the battery only by connecting the charger directly to the battery terminals. The on-board socket is switched off if the voltage is below this lower voltage limit.
